GUIDE

Can you use hair oil
on your beard?

Yes. Most beard oils are made from the same carrier oils as hair oils: jojoba, argan, sweet almond, grapeseed and castor. A few drops soften the beard, help with itchiness and dryness, and keep the skin underneath moisturized. Just be realistic: oil cares for the beard you have, it does not create new beard hair where none grows.

Why the same oils work for hair and beard

Herba Luxe Hair Growth Oil ($21, 100 ml) contains all of these, plus coconut oil and vitamin E.

How to apply hair oil to your beard

Patch test first

The skin on your face is more sensitive than your scalp, and the oil contains essential oils (rosemary and lavender). Before the first use, put a drop on the inside of your forearm or jaw and wait 24 hours. If you see redness or itching, don't use it on your face. Keep it away from your eyes.

Beard and scalp in one routine

If you already use the oil on your scalp (see hair loss in men), one bottle covers both: about 10 drops on the scalp 3–4 times a week and a few drops on the beard daily.

FAQ

Can I use hair growth oil on my beard? Yes. Hair oils and beard oils are usually made from the same carrier oils, such as jojoba, argan and sweet almond. Use 3 to 5 drops on a clean beard, and do a patch test first because facial skin is more sensitive.

Will hair oil make my beard grow? Oil softens and cares for the beard you have, and can make it look fuller and neater. It does not create beard hair in areas where none grows, which is mostly genetic.

How many drops should I use on my beard? Three to five drops for a short beard, a few more for a long one. Too much leaves the beard shiny and greasy.

When is the best time to apply beard oil? After a shower, on a clean beard that is towel-dried. Rub the oil into the skin first, then through the hair, and comb it.

Is it safe for sensitive skin? Do a patch test first: one drop on the forearm or jaw, then wait 24 hours. If you notice redness or itching, do not use it on your face.
