It depends on what is causing the flakes. If your scalp is simply dry, oil can help. If it is real dandruff, oil is not a treatment and leaving it on the scalp can make things worse. An anti-dandruff shampoo is what treats dandruff.
Dry scalp or dandruff?
- Dry scalp: small, white, dry flakes; the scalp feels tight; often worse in winter or after very hot showers.
- Dandruff: larger, yellowish or oily flakes; often itchy; the scalp may look red or greasy. It is linked to a yeast that lives on everyone's scalp and feeds on scalp oils.
Why oil can make dandruff worse
Because the yeast behind dandruff feeds on oils, leaving oil on a dandruff-prone scalp for hours or overnight can feed it. Some oils, such as coconut, are especially rich. That is why we do not recommend any hair oil, including ours, as a dandruff treatment.
What actually treats dandruff
- An anti-dandruff shampoo with an active ingredient such as zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide or salicylic acid, used as directed on the label.
- Regular washing, so oil and flakes don't build up.
- A doctor or dermatologist if it doesn't improve after a few weeks, or if the scalp is very red, painful or spreading to the face.
Herba Luxe Shampoo is a purifying, balancing shampoo for normal and oily scalps. It is not an anti-dandruff shampoo.
If your scalp is just dry
- Use a few drops (5–8) of Herba Luxe Hair Growth Oil on a dry scalp before washing.
- Leave it 2–4 hours, never overnight, then wash it out.
- Lower the water temperature and avoid over-washing with harsh products.

Once dandruff is under control
When the flakes have cleared, you can go back to an oil routine for the lengths and scalp, as long as you wash the oil out the same day. If flakes come back, stop the oil and return to the anti-dandruff shampoo.
